The largest region in the country. It also produces a large chunk of food crops for the country. Its size reveals distinct changes in landscape and architecture (beautiful traditional mud walled villages). Its capital, Tamale is accessible both by air and road.
The region prides in the:
- Mole National Park: Home of 93 species of animals including herds of elephants, and lions. Leopards can be seen resting after a kill. There are also 300 bird species.
- Larabanga Mosque:13th century mosque is one of the holiest sites in Ghana.It is believed to be built by Moorish traders and is distinctive façade has been widely photographed. In the mosque is a Qur’an which is as old as the mosque and its origin is still a mystery. Nearby the mosque is the
- Larabanga Mystery stone: A boulder that is the subject of a splendid local legend.
- Handmade textiles at Daboya
- Nalerigu Defence Wall: Built in the 16th century to protect the village from slave raiders (part of the slave route project).
- Salaga Slave Market: Slaves were exchanged here for cola nuts and gold. Traces of this trade are present to date.
- Yendi, grave of the notorious slave raider Babatu: Babatu was killed during an onslaught on the town. Though he was not of Ghanaian origin, he was killed and buried in Ghana.
